Let’s do a demo on turning a shop mallet! I think that’s a great project to utilize the different cuts on a skew and will give me plenty of time to talk through the different cuts and still be able to complete a project.

Join us for an immersive and hands-on experience as we delve into the art of woodturning. In this engaging workshop, aptly named “Woodturning 101,” you will learn about safety, the lathe, tool presentation, and complete a project, along with a boxed lunch.

Christine started woodturning in 2016 and was immediately hooked after turning her first piece. Within just two years, she became a full-time woodturner in 2018 due to the high demand for her work at shows and galleries.

The pandemic in 2019 altered Christine’s woodturning journey, leading her to begin carving birds of prey. Since then, relief carving and sculpting with locally sourced woods have become a major part of her artistic practice.

Today, commissions, demonstrations, and the growing demand for her classes all reflect the quality and intricacy of Christine’s work.

Christine Smith will lead this workshop focused on turning a simple box with a wide rim and enhancing it through carved and painted surface decoration. Participants will learn approaches to clean box construction, basic carving techniques, and an overview of transferring images and applying paint to turned surfaces. Christine will share examples of boxes at various stages of completion and have instructional materials available to support the learning process. This workshop is well suited for turners interested in adding decorative carving and painted detail to their work.

David Wyke will demonstrate the process of turning an 8” heart-shaped bowl, beginning with the heart profile cut out before mounting the blank on the lathe. This approach simplifies the process compared to shaping the bowl after turning and allows for greater control during the turning itself. David will walk through the key steps involved and highlight two critical techniques that make this an approachable and repeatable project. The demonstration is suitable for turners interested in learning an efficient method for creating heart-shaped bowls with clean, consistent results.
